Depression Counselling in Exeter and Torquay

Exploring the underlying causes of your depression

What is depression?

Depression affects one in six people regardless of gender, age, or ethnicity. As a complex mental illness, depression can affect people in different ways and is not a single diagnosis. But just like other mental and physical illnesses, there are different types of depression with different levels of acuteness.

Some of the more common types of depression can include recurrent, reactive, chronic, post-natal depression (PND), or even seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

There are also many different symptoms for all depressions, many of which can greatly affect both personal and professional relationships, including:

  • Feeling dejected
  • Irritability
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Loss of appetite
  • Social withdrawal
  • Grief and bereavement
  • Redundancy

Depression Counselling & Psychotherapy

Many of our clients tell us they’re taking prescribed antidepressant medication. This is common and if you’re taking medication also, counselling can work effectively alongside your medication to give good results. But, together, we’ll explore the underlying causes of your depression and look at the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that could contribute to your low mood.

Depression counselling treatments are adapted to your symptoms, and together, we’ll explore the root causes of your depression or low mood. We may also incorporate cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) techniques that focus on the long-term lifting of the cycles of depression and low mood.

And through our sessions, we’ll develop tailor-made coping strategies to help you manage and overcome low moods while helping you to learn techniques that are effective for you in the long run.
