What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) therapy?
Neuro-Linguistic Programming – or NLP for short – is a practical and achievable therapy to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication and help make positive changes in their lives through language, behaviours, and thoughts.
NLP therapy looks at your thoughts, feelings, and emotions as things you can control rather than something that controls you.
Using NLP, we examine how your thoughts directly affect your behaviour. And effective behavioural change is done through conversation, like other talking therapies, working on both a conscious and unconscious level. First developed in the 1970s by Dr Richard Bandler and Dr John Grinder, they understood that all behaviour has a structure which can be identified, learned, and changed, if necessary.
Even the name ‘Neuro-Linguistic Programming’ can give you a breakdown of the main elements and how it works:
Neuro: The thoughts we currently have
Linguistic: The language we use both internally and externally to express those thoughts
Programming: The behaviours we have that can be changed
With NLP helping to change your mental and emotional behaviour patterns, you have the basis to manage your mind more effectively. As a result, you can think and act in a way that allows you to live your life and perform at your best with self-awareness, communication skills, and confidence.
Is NLP different to counselling?
Counselling is helpful if you need to express your thoughts and feelings to a trained counsellor. And, rather than giving advice or specific answers, a counsellor will listen and offer new ideas or perspectives by discussing your issues with you at length. But many people don’t feel comfortable with this method of therapy
