Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Counselling in Exeter and Torquay

Helping you manage your feelings and emotions

What is PTSD?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) occurs as the result of an extreme, distressing, or life-threatening experience. It can develop and affect both adults and children after seeing or being involved with incidents such as a serious accident or time served at war. However, other extreme incidents may lead to PTSD including violence, abuse, or serious illness.

While PTSD is a serious mental health issue, the signs may not develop immediately, often coming to the surface days, weeks, or even months after the event in question. However, some people may go on to develop PTSD while others might not, depending on several different factors. These can include how mentally strong they feel in themselves, what their upbringing was like, and effective their support system was after the event.

Some common signs and symptoms of PTSD that may affect sufferers soon after the event may include:

  • Nightmares or event flashbacks
  • Frightening thoughts you can’t control
  • Avoiding reminders or not talking about the event
  • Nightmares or sleep problems
  • Feeling numb or empty
  • Self-isolation or feeling withdrawn
  • A feeling of being alert or on edge
  • Rage and anger
  • Behavioural changes or physical complaints in children

PTSD Counselling

For many sufferers, it’s the PTSD signs and symptoms that motivate them to seek counselling. But it can turn out that seeing a counsellor in a place of safety will allow you to feel more comfortable in dealing with the effects of PTSD. Over a period of time, you can come to terms with the deeper issues behind what is causing them – and what triggers them.

As PTSD counsellors, we can work together, taking things one step at a time to find structured techniques and coping strategies to help you manage your feelings and emotions, especially when triggered by other actions or events. This will help you come to terms with the trauma you’ve experienced, help control your triggers, and allow you to have a greater understanding of yourself.
